Trailer Watch: Cloud Atlas — Co-Directed by Lana Wachowski

The Wachowskis are an incredibly successful writing/directing duo best known for the Matrix Trilogy. They are also known for the cult classic Bound and for writing V for Vendetta.

They’ve been off the charts for a while but now they are back writing and directing Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

The reason this is of note is that where in the past when the Wachowski’s worked together, they worked together as brothers, and now one of the brothers has transitioned from Larry to Lana.

I can only imagine what it takes to make the decision to transition your gender, but watching how this is being handled in Hollywood where there are such issues with women directors in general is going to be interesting. Right now it pretty much seems like a non-issue — which it should be. This is Lana’s public debut and I imagine that as Toronto gets closer there will more scrutiny on her since there are not many high profile transgendered directors in Hollywood. One I am aware of is Kimberly Reed who did the terrific documentary Prodigal Sons.

I think that Lana could have a bit of an easier time because she has a track record of success as a writer and director that she can stand on. I’m sure it also helps that she and her brother are partners in their work.

Cloud Atlas looks like a film that’s got the whole kitchen sink thrown in. It also looks quite epic and fantastic. Great cast and great trailer. We so need to see something good from Halle Berry.

Don’t miss the directors commentary which introduces the trailer.
