Set in 1969, just a few years before the Supreme Court’s game-changing 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, “Ask for Jane” sees college students fighting to offer women autonomy over their own bodies. A trailer for the Rachel Carey drama just dropped.
In a time when abortion was punishable by imprisonment and getting birth control was nearly impossible, Rose (Cait Cortelyou) and Janice (Cody Horn) help a fellow University of Chicago student in need. She’s pregnant, and the two find her a doctor willing to perform the procedure in secret. The experience inspires Rose and Janice to support other desperate women, offering them a safer alternative to rat poison and razors.
The pair form the Jane Collective, a secret organization dedicated to helping women obtain safe abortions, and putting their lives at risk to do so. “Operating like a spy network, complete with blindfolds and code names, the Janes help thousands of women… but they can’t hide from the police forever,” the film’s official synopsis hints.
“Women’s bodies are always in men’s hands,” says Janice. “This was us doing it for us.”
Based on a true story, “Ask for Jane” hits theaters May 17. Other pics inspired by the Jane Collective are also in the works: Kimberly Peirce’s Michelle Williams-starrer “This is Jane” and Elisabeth Moss-led “Call Jane.”
