“You think you got your sense of humor all by yourself? Uh-uh, you know where that comes from,” Tig Notaro says in the trailer for “Call Your Mother.” The documentary special sees a bunch of stand-ups and performers discussing their moms’ influence on their comedy. Like Notaro, many of them suggest they’re funny because their mothers were funny.
“My mom pulses through my performance,” cabaret comedienne Bridget Everett reveals in the spot, “the full mouth and, like, the tit-swinging, and all that.”
Others talk about integrating their mothers into their acts. “If I don’t talk about her, she’ll go, ‘Where was I? I thought I was gonna be in your talent show,’ which is what she calls my stand-up,” “Inside Amy Schumer” alumna Rachel Feinstein admits. “She would rather be the center of attention than me not talk about her at all,” “The Mindy Project’s” Fortune Feimster observes. “Oh, that’s true,” her mother chimes in.
“Call Your Mother” is directed by Oscar-nominated documentarians Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady. Caroline Hirsch, the founder and owner of legendary comedy club Carolines, serves as executive producer.
Awkwafina (“The Farewell”), Judy Gold (“Friends from College”), Yvonne Orji (“Insecure”), and Kristen Schaal (“Bob’s Burgers”) are also among the doc’s interviewees.
Ewing and Grady have directed six features together, including “One of Us,” “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You,” and “Detropia.” They received an Oscar nomination for their doc “Jesus Camp.” Next, they’re teaming up with Ronan Farrow for an HBO documentary about violence and threats against journalists.
“Call Your Mother” will premiere on Comedy Central on Mother’s Day, May 10.
