Disillusioned by dating — the constant swiping through apps, the awkward conversations, the slim pickings — Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones, “Normal People”) is about ready to give up on finding a partner. But then, as we see in the new trailer for Sundance pic “Fresh,” she experiences “a straight girl’s fantasy come true”: a meet-cute with a handsome, charming stranger at the grocery store.
As a rule, Noa is wary of trying to find “happiness through someone else,” but she falls hard for Steve (Sebastian Stan, “I, Tonya”). Unfortunately, as soon as she starts to feel secure in her new relationship, Steve reveals his true, horrifying colors. “You’re gonna freak out,” he tells Noa. “No games — isn’t that what you wanted?”
It’s unclear exactly what Steve has planned for Noa, but she’s obviously in serious danger. “It’s about giving, giving yourself over to somebody, becoming one forever,” Steve says. “That’s love.” Never has a romantic declaration seemed more menacing.
Mimi Cave’s feature directorial debut, “Fresh” was acquired by Searchlight Pictures ahead of its premiere at Sundance last month. Lauryn Kahn (“Ibiza”) penned the horror-romantic comedy mashup.
“Fresh” will be available on Hulu March 4.
