Trailer Watch: Dating Paxton Doesn’t Solve All of Devi’s Problems in Season 3 of “Never Have I Ever”

"Never Have I Ever": Lara Solanki/Netflix

At the end of “Never Have I Ever’s” second season, Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) finally got together with her longtime crush, Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet). Now, in the new trailer for the Mindy Kaling series’ third outing, Devi and Paxton are now Daxton, and the whole school is buzzing about their courtship.

Initially, Devi is psyched that her “social status has skyrocketed so much that now people hate [her].” “My face is so relaxed!” she marvels. “Oh my god, that’s why popular people age better.” But eventually the newfound attention starts to mess with her head. “She’s dying, right? It’s like a deathbed, last wishes thing?” Devi overhears a classmate speculating about her relationship with Paxton. “Maybe she’s just a huge slut,” another offers.

“No one else thinks we make any sense,” Devi tells Paxton in frustration. “No, you don’t think we make any sense,” he replies. Throw in some teenage romantic awkwardness, a potential new crush, and some good, old-fashioned insecurity, and Devi’s got her work cut out for her in Season 3.

As her therapist (Niecy Nash) aptly puts it, “Did we discover being in a relationship doesn’t solve all of our problems?”

Kaling created “Never Have I Ever” with Lang Fisher. It’s loosely based on her own high school experiences. Kaling has also created/co-created “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” the TV reboot of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Champions,” and “The Mindy Project.” She received six Emmy nominations for exec producing and writing for “The Office.” “The Morning Show” and “Monsters at Work” are among her more recent acting credits.

Ramakrishnan most recently did voice work for Domee Shi’s coming-of-age Pixar movie “Turning Red.”

“Never Have I Ever” returns August 12 on Netflix. Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Lee Rodriguez, and Ramona Young also star.
