“I’m pretty sure bisexuality is a myth invented by ad executives to sell flavored vodka,” says Desiree Akhavan in a new trailer for “The Bisexual.” “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” writer-director plays Leila, a New Yorker living in London who thinks “lame slut” when she hears the word “bisexual.” “It’s tacky,” she explains. “It’s gauche — it makes you seem disingenuous, like your genitals have no allegiance. It’s not a cool thing to be and it makes my fucking skin crawl.” And yet Leila is bisexual — the bisexual referred to in the upcoming Channel 4/Hulu series’ title.
“The Bisexual” sees Leila leaving a long-term relationship with her ex and business partner (Maxine Peake, “The Theory of Everything”) and moving in with a new roommate (Brian Gleeson, “Logan Lucky”). “I didn’t know myself outside of being yours. I gave you my 20s,” she tells her former love.
Advised that the best way to get over someone is to get under someone, Leila begins a journey of self-discovery that includes pursuing her sexual interest in men.

Akhavan directed “The Bisexual” and co-wrote the project with frequent collaborator Cecilia Frugiuele, who co-penned and produced “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and also produced Akhavan’s feature directorial debut, “Appropriate Behavior.”
“The Bisexual” premieres on Channel 4 in the UK today, October 10, and will launch on Hulu later this year.
