For many, the holidays are laughably far from being the most wonderful time of the year. There’s nothing magical about overcrowded airports, the stress of choosing perfect gifts (and maxing out credit cards to pay for them) and having to explain why, yes, you’re still unwed and childless. The first trailer for “I Am Sam” director Jessie Nelson’s “Love the Coopers” plays on the disparity between the idealized version of the holidays sung about in Christmas carols and the kind most of us actually experience.
Diane Keaton stars as Charlotte, the matriarch of the Cooper family. She’s hellbent on making this year’s Christmas the most special holiday ever. “It’s the only time of the year when we’re all together,” Charlotte explains. “I want everyone to have the memory of the perfect Christmas.”
Based on this trailer, the Coopers’ Christmas isn’t shaping up to be “perfect,” so much as disastrous. Charlotte’s daughters are getting into serious shenanigans. Emma (Marisa Tomei) is arrested after a botched attempt to steal jewelry by concealing it in her mouth, while Eleanor (Olivia Wilde) tries to convince a stranger to attend the Coopers’ Christmas Eve party so she can tell everyone he’s her boyfriend.
Watch the holiday hi-jinks unfold November 13 when “Love the Coopers” hits theaters. Amanda Seyfried and June Squibb co-star in the comedy.
