Trailer Watch: Diane Kruger Murders Her Husband and Hits the Road in Fabienne Berthaud’s ‘Sky’

Babies don’t save marriages, and in “Sky,” a vacation can’t either. A trailer has arrived for writer-director Fabienne Berthaud’s latest film. The drama centers on a French couple who travel to the U.S. as a last-ditch effort to salvage their relationship. The outcome is more explosive than a divorce.

To say that ill-tempered, heavy drinking Richard (Gilles Lellouche, “Families”) is a less-than-ideal traveling companion for Romy (Diane Kruger, “The Bridge”) is an understatement. When an argument between the two escalates into a physical altercation with an unexpected outcome, Romy flees the scene and embarks on a solo road trip through the high desert.

“You didn’t strike me as a killer,” a cop (Joshua Jackson, “The Affair”) tells Romy. But Romy is beginning to realize that she has dimensions even she herself was previously unaware of. She meets a mysterious and emotionally vacant man (Norman Reedus, “The Walking Dead”) in a Vegas casino and, despite his protestations, the two enter into a quasi-relationship when she shows up in his desolate hometown unannounced. “I thought you didn’t want to hear about love anymore,” he complains when Romy professes her feelings for him.

“Sky” marks Berthaud’s first English-language film since the release of 2009’s “Lily Sometimes,” which also starred Kruger. The frequent collaborators worked together on 2005’s “Frankie” as well.

“I had this dream to shoot in the U.S., in the Californian high desert, with my friend and muse Diane Kruger,” said Berthaud in an interview with Women and Hollywood. “I wanted to offer her a beautiful part in a film shot in English with American actors. My distinctive taste for freedom is also linked to the idea of traveling — traveling from home, traveling in the film and inside these human adventures.”

Lena Dunham (“Girls”) and Q’orianka Kilcher (“Sons of Anarchy”) co-star.

The film made its world premiere at TIFF in 2015. You can catch “Sky” in theaters and on VOD April 15.
