Drew Barrymore pulls double duty in a new trailer for “The Stand In.” Directed by Jamie Babbit, the comedy tells the story of Candy, an actress, and Paula, her stand in. Barrymore plays both.
With 15 films under her belt and $2 billion at the box office, Candy is a household name — but her star is fading. Thanks to her diva behavior, she’s no longer America’s sweetheart, and is quickly becoming a punchline. When she’s ordered to serve a year in rehab, Candy hires Paula, an aspiring actress, to take her place. It’s not long before Paula, who is loving all the attention she’s getting as Candy, is also doing press as her boss. “You seem to like being Candy more than I ever did,” Candy tells her.
Barrymore’s talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show,” premiered on CBS this September. She most recently starred in “Santa Clarita Diet,” a zombie comedy that ran on Netflix for three seasons. “The Stand In” marks her first feature since Catherine Hardwicke’s 2015 tearjerker “Miss You Already.”
Babbit previously directed Barrymore in an episode of “Santa Clarita Diet.” “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” “Russian Doll,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are among her other TV credits. A three-time Emmy nominee, she was recognized for her work as an exec producer and director on “Silicon Valley.” Her features include “But I’m a Cheerleader” and “Addicted to Fresno.”
“The Stand In” hits select theaters, on demand, and digital December 11. Holland Taylor (“Hollywood”) and Michelle Buteau (“The First Wives Club”) co-star.
