Trailer Watch: Elisabeth Moss Terrifies as A Woman on the Verge in ‘Queen of Earth’

The newly released trailer for the psychological thriller “Queen of Earth” promises to show Elisabeth Moss “as you’ve never seen her before.”

The retro-looking spot for the film — paired beautifully with a dread-inducing voiceover that sounds like it came straight out of an ’80s horror flick — offers a glimpse of a terrifying Moss, who calmly intones, “You are worthless. You are weak and greedy. You are why people betray one another…. You are why there’s no escape from indecency.” (Way harsh, Tai.) Catherine is speaking to her (formerly?) dear friend Ginny (Katherine Waterston, “Boardwalk Empire”), who is going through a slow breakdown of her own.

Moss plays Catherine, an artist living in the shadow of her father, who gratefully accepts Ginny’s invite to spend some time in a cottage on the lake — a place where “tranquility isn’t just a myth.” Things take a dark turn — as they inevitably do — and relaxation, peace and quiet are disturbed by “emotional imbalance.”

“I feel like I’m seeing you for the first time,” Ginny tells a more-than-slightly unhinged Catherine.

Moss re-teams here with director Alex Ross Perry, who made the lovable “Mad Men” actress the best part of his last film, “Listen Up Philip.”

“Queen of Earth” opens August 27.
