A trailer has dropped for Shannon Murphy’s feature directorial debut. “Babyteeth” sees “Sharp Objects” breakout Eliza Scanlen playing another disturbed, rebellious teen. The pic premieres at Venice Film Festival later this month, where it’s one of just two titles directed by women screening in the main competition.
Penned by Rita Kalnejais, “Babyteeth” tells the story of Milla, a seriously ill highschooler who falls head over heels for a drug dealer. “When I met you, it was like you weren’t scared of anything,” Milla tells her paramour (Toby Wallace). Her parents (Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn), on the other hand, are scared about plenty — but particularly their daughter’s relationship with her 23-year-old beau.
Murphy’s TV directing credits include “On the Ropes,” “Rake,” and “Sisters.”
Scanlen plays Beth March in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” set to bow December 25. “Babyteeth” doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
