Elle Fanning struggles to make sense of her dad’s chaotic mind in Sally Potter’s latest. A trailer has landed for “The Roads Not Taken,” which will make its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival later this month. The drama sees Molly (Fanning) trying to take care of Leo (Javier Bardem), who seems to be struggling with mental health issues.
Describing his life as a long voyage with one obstacle after another, Leo explains that he must “decide whether to continue to live his life in exile or come back home, to what was once his home.” Convinced that “everything is broken,” Leo imagines the alternate lives he could have lived.
“We all have regrets,” Molly tells her father. “However far away you go, you were always you.”
Fanning and Potter previously collaborated on 2012’s “Ginger & Rosa.” The former’s recent credits include “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” “Teen Spirit,” and “Mary Shelley.”
Potter’s most recent film, ensemble comedy “The Party,” premiered at the 2017 Berlinale. “Orlando” and “Yes” are among her other features.
“The Roads Not Taken” is screening in Competition at the Berlinale. The program is composed of 18 titles, and six of them, or 33 percent, are directed or co-directed by women. The pic hits select U.S. theaters March 13. Laura Linney and Salma Hayek co-star.
