When Ellen DeGeneres announced her plans to return to stand-up, she expected her friends to welcome her back to the comedy scene with open arms. But some had reservations. “Do you think you’re still relatable?” one asked the beloved daytime host. The Emmy winner’s new stand-up special on Netflix deals with that concern head-on. “Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable” sees the “Finding Dory” star joking about her butlers, the unimaginable prospect of flying coach, and the price she pays for encouraging viewers to be nice.
“A few years ago I started ending my show by saying, ‘Be kind to one another,'” DeGeneres explains. “But here’s the downside: I can never do anything unkind ever. If someone cuts me off in a dangerous way, if I honk, they’re like ‘Ellen?'” There’s nothing she can do but smile, wave, and internalize her road rage.
“Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable” launches December 18 and marks her return to stand-up after a 15-year hiatus. Check out the trailer to see DeGeneres recall what it was like to lose her eponymous sitcom after coming out and what she told a station manager who claimed “no one’s going to watch a lesbian during the day.”
