The “Mother of Dragons” finds herself playing an underachieving elf in a new trailer for “Last Christmas.” The rom-com sees “Game of Thrones” alumna Emilia Clarke taking on the role of Kate, a woman struggling to overcome a traumatic event from her past. A “crushing disappointment” to her boss, Kate works as an elf at a Christmas store. She’s feeling apathetic this holiday season, which doesn’t exactly lead to a great performance as one of Santa’s cheerful helpers.
Kate’s family worries that she’s “throwing away her life working in some silly Christmas shop. “I’m not a career elf,” she insists. “It’s all part of my grand plan to become a famous singer.” But Kate doesn’t seem capable of executing a “grand plan” in this state. Her mother (Emma Thompson) is quick to tell her doctor that Kate is “drinking like a pirate.”
When Kate meets a new guy (Henry Golding, “Crazy Rich Asians”), she slowly opens up about experiencing a medical emergency last Christmas that’s left her feeling “scared all the time.”
Clarke is up for an Emmy this year for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in “Game of Thrones.” This is her fourth nomination for the HBO fantasy, which concluded its eighth and final season earlier this year.
Thompson wrote the script for “Last Christmas” alongside playwright Bryony Kimmings. Paul Feig (“A Simple Favor”) directed.
“Last Christmas” hits theaters November 8.
