Mary Poppins is coming back to earth. The beloved nanny takes another trip from the sky via a kite in the first trailer for “Mary Poppins Returns.” Set 25 years after the events of the first film, the sequel sees Emily Blunt taking on Julie Andrews’ iconic 1964 role.
Mary has once again been sent to look after the Banks children, Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael (Ben Whishaw), who are now in fact adults. “We’re about to lose our home,” Michael tells his own children. “Everything’s fallen to pieces since your mother…” We don’t hear exactly what happened to the children’s mother, though it seems that she’s passed away. Mary assures the next generation of Banks kids that “nothing’s gone forever, only out of place” and with that, she begins to re-introduce joy and fun into their lives — and to Jane and Michael’s.
Michael has forgotten what it’s like to be a child, but Mary is determined to remind him of childhood’s magic and delight.
Blunt was last seen in box office smash “A Quiet Place.” The horror pic was also a critical success. “The Girl on the Train,” “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” and “Sicario” are among her recent credits.
“Mary Poppins Returns” hits theaters December 19. The star-studded musical’s supporting cast includes Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Dick Van Dyke.
