Emily Mortimer refuses to kowtow to Patricia Clarkson in a new trailer for “The Bookshop.” “You have to succeed if you give everything you have,” says Florence (Mortimer). And it’ll take everything she has to stand up to Violet (Clarkson), a local grand dame and bully in the conservative East Anglian coastal town they both call home.
Florence has made an enemy of Violet by opening a bookshop in an old home that the latter believes should be made into a local art center. “She’s a very powerful woman,” Florence is warned. “She wants to get rid of you and she won’t stop.” But Florence refuses to be pressured into selling her store. She’s determined to keep the bookshop — and culture — alive in their town, and she finds allies in a reclusive book-loving widower (Bill Nighy, “Their Finest”) and a spirited young co-worker (Honor Kneafsey, “Miss You Already”).
The drama is written and directed by Isabel Coixet, whose other credits include “Learning to Drive,” which also stars Clarkson, “The Secret Life of Words,” and “Elegy.”
Based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s 1978 novel of the same name, “The Bookshop” opens August 24. Check out the trailer to see why Florence’s storefront causes a stir.
