Trailer Watch: Emily Watson Squares Off Against Her Beloved Son in “God’s Creatures”

"God's Creatures"

The prodigal son returns and sends his mother’s life into a tailspin in “God’s Creatures,” Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer’s follow-up to “The Fits.” A new trailer for the psychological drama introduces us to the small Irish fishing village Aileen (Emily Watson) calls home. When her son, Brian (Paul Mescal, “Normal People”), returns after leaving the tight-knit community behind, she’s convinced he’s “different” and has “grown into himself.” Their happy reunion takes an unexpected turn when the police show up at the family’s doorstep.

“There’s been a claim made by a young woman. Brian says he was home with you last night,” Aileen is told. Brian isn’t telling the truth about his whereabouts, and Aileen corroborates his false story. Though she’s willing to lie for her son, Aileen begins to see him in a new light. “Who do you think I am?” he asks her. “You have this impossible image of me.”

Watson received Oscar nods for “Hilary and Jackie” and “Breaking the Waves.” She scored an Emmy nod in 2019 for “Chernobyl.”

“God’s Creatures” premiered earlier this year at the Directors Fortnight sidebar of Cannes Film Festival. It hits theaters and on demand September 30.
