Trailer Watch: Emma Roberts Faces Evil Forces in “The Blackcoat’s Daughter”

“The Blackcoat’s Daughter”: A24

When a trailer begins with a decapitated head being mentioned, you know that a whole lot of unpleasantness is guaranteed to follow. A bloody, atmospheric spot for “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” has dropped. The horror film stars Emma Roberts (“Scream Queens”), Kiernan Shipka (“Mad Men”), and Lucy Boynton (“Sing Street”).

After their parents fail to pick them up under mysterious circumstances, Kat (Shipka) and Rose (Boynton) are left alone at their prestigious prep school, Bramford, during winter break. “While the girls experience increasingly strange and creepy occurrences at the isolated school, we cross cut to another story — that of Joan (Roberts), a troubled young woman on the road, who, for unknown reasons, is determined to get to Bramford as fast as she can,” the film’s official synopsis details. “As Joan gets closer to the school, Kat becomes plagued by progressively intense and horrifying visions, with Rose doing her best to help her new friend as she slips further and further into the grasp of an unseen evil force.”

The trailer includes conversations about devil-worshiping sisters and the existence of god. There’s also footage of knives, blood-stained snow, and plenty of other stuff that will give you nightmares.

You can catch “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” on DirecTV February 16 or when it hits theaters March 31. The film was written and directed by Oz Perkins (“I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House”).
