“Let me give you some advice. You can’t care about anyone else,” Emma Thompson tells Emma Stone in a new trailer for “Cruella.” “Everyone else is an obstacle. You care what an obstacle wants or feels, you’re dead.”
A live-action prequel to”101 Dalmatians,” the Disney pic traces Cruella de Vil’s (Stone) evolution from an aspiring fashion designer named Estella to an unhinged villain fixated on Dalmatian fur. Estella takes her boss Baroness von Hellman’s (Thompson) advice to heart, and seems to identify Hellman herself as an obstacle. When the fashion icon tells Estella that she “has talent” but questions whether she has the “killer instinct,” Estella is all too keen to prove her wrong.
Stone won an Oscar for “La La Land” and received nods for “The Favourite” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).” “Zombieland: Double Tap” and “Maniac” are among her most recent credits.
A four-time Oscar nominee, Thompson won Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Howards End” and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published for “Sense and Sensibility.” Her recent credits include “Last Christmas” and “Late Night.”
“Cruella” hits theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access May 28. Dana Fox (“Home Before Dark”) and Tony McNamara (“The Great”) penned the screenplay.
