Trailer Watch: Exploding Castles and Movie-Star Unicorns Add Magic to ‘Inside Out’

A newly cut trailer for Pixar’s “Inside Out” is here, and it’s a tearjerker.

The latest spot for the animated feature, voiced in part by Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Phyllis Smith, takes us on a brief but emotional journey that begins with a tense dinner conversation between 11-year-old Riley and her parents.

We get more insight into Riley’s individual Emotions, especially Joy and Sadness, when the two are swept away from Headquarters (where all of the Emotions collaborate and negotiate) along with Riley’s core memories. Joy and Sadness embark on an epic journey back to Headquarters, venturing through Riley’s longterm memories and Imagination Land (which includes a diva unicorn).

“Inside Out” is one of our most anticipated movies of the year. As we wrote, “Everyone has an inner world, and all too often children are treated as though theirs either don’t matter or don’t exist. We’re looking forward to this intimate look into a young person’s interior life — and a movie that treats kids as the complicated beings that they are.”

“Inside Out” opens June 19. Check out the trailer below to see the film’s funny interpretations of a brain freeze, life-affirming air guitar playing, the magic of a castle exploding into sparkles, and the travesty that is broccoli as a pizza topping.
