“Why do I have to compete with a kidnapper for your love?” a mother asks her newly reunited daughter in a trailer for “Stolen by My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story.” Based on a true story, the upcoming Lifetime pic is set in 1998 and sees 18-year-old Kamiyah (Rayven Symone Ferrell, “The Hate U Give”) discovering she was abducted as a baby and the family she was raised in isn’t her own.
Kamiyah grew up believing that the woman who kidnapped her, Gloria Williams (Niecy Nash, “Claws”), was her mom. She begins to suspect that her past isn’t quite as it seems when she applies for a job and is unable to provide a social security card or a birth certificate. Following questions from Kamiyah, Gloria confesses to her crime. But that’s just the beginning of the story.
Though she claims not to know who Gloria is anymore, Kamiyah seems to believe her when she says that she’s the woman who raised her and who loves her. Kamiyah is eventually reunited with her biological mother, Shanara Mobley (Ta’Rhonda Jones, “Empire”), but she feels like she is in “a tug of war” between the women claiming her as their own.
“Stolen by My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story” premieres on Lifetime January 18. “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts is among its producers. The film will be followed by a companion documentary featuring the real-life people it depicts.
