Trailer Watch: Food Industry Scrutinized in Fed Up

“This is the first generation of American children expected to lead shorter lives than their parents,” intones a talking head in Stephanie Soechtig’s sugar expose Fed Up. “Over 95% of all Americans will be overweight or obese in two decades,” warns narrator and executive producer Katie Couric.

Fed Up aims its righteous, unflinching gaze at the junk food industry, which the film argues is the new Big Tobacco. “By 2050, one out of every three Americans will have diabetes,” continues Couric. It’s a fat new world that we’re facing — and Fed Up is intent on finally laying down the blame where it belongs.

While relying on medical experts and foodie luminaries to critique the food industry and the U.S. government’s efforts to cover up the danger of sugar, the documentary will also follow a group of overweight children for two years as they attempt to lose weight.

Fed Up opens wide May 9.
