“The only chance we’ll ever escape from the past is for everyone to recognize it,” says Michaela Coel in a new trailer for “Black Earth Rising.” The Netflix limited series sees the BAFTA-winning “Chewing Gum” star playing Kate. Now a law investigator living in London, Kate is a genocide survivor who was born in Rwanda and raised in England by her adoptive mother.
“I don’t remember my family or my country,” Kate explains. “Nothing. I don’t know my own name. The only thing I know is that it happened to nearly a million people and I’ll never forget it and neither should anyone else.”
Determined to discover the truth of her past, Kate teams up with a lawyer (John Goodman) to get answers despite being warned that “some things are best left forgotten” and “the truth is far more complex than you may wish to hear.”
Besides “Chewing Gum,” Coel’s credits include “Black Mirror,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and “Been So Long.” She’ll reprise her role as Tracey in Season 3 of “Chewing Gum,” though a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet.
“Black Earth Rising” launches on Netflix January 25.
