Trailer Watch: Gillian Anderson Offers “Sex Education” on Netflix

"Sex Education": Sam Taylor/ Netflix

Gillian Anderson asks a man about his earliest memory of his scrotum in a new trailer for “Sex Education.” She also wonders whether her teenage son would like to talk about why he’s pretending to masturbate, and offers him and his friends condoms. The upcoming Netflix series sees the “X-Files” star playing Jean, a sex therapist who never shies away from what most would consider awkward conversations — much to the horror of her shy and perpetually uncomfortable son, Otis (Asa Butterfield, “Ender’s Game”).

Otis is decidedly more tight-lipped about sex and puberty than his mom, but he’s still enlisted by a classmate hoping to capitalize on her talents. “The students at this school need your help and we need their money,” says Maeve (Emma Mackey). With years of his mom’s unsolicited advice at his disposal, Otis reluctantly agrees to offer sex therapy to his peers at school, who worry about everything from wanking addictions to wonky pubes.

“You can’t choose who you’re attracted to,” Otis wisely observes. “You can’t engineer a relationship. You are who you are. Don’t let anyone take that away from you,” he urges.

“Sex Education” drops on Netflix January 11. Laurie Nunn (“The Summer House,” “Wearing Purple”) created the comedy series.
