“We were together nine years. I thought we could handle anything,” says Gina Rodriguez in a new trailer for “Someone Great.” Written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Sweet/Vicious”), the Netflix rom com sees Jenny (Rodriguez) discovering that she and her long-term boyfriend (LaKeith Stanfield) actually can’t handle distance. When the aspiring music journalist lands her dream job in San Francisco, her boyfriend tells her he’s not ready to leave New York City and come along.
Jenny’s unexpected breakup and imminent move leave her dreading the future. “I leave in a week and then I turn 30 and then I die, probably,” she says. Fortunately her BFFs (DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow) are there to offer much needed emotional support — and join her for an epic night out to say goodbye to the “end of an era.” But the trailer hints that Jenny and her ex’s story isn’t over just yet.
Best known for her Golden Globe-winning role on The CW’s “Jane the Virgin,” which will be returning for its fifth and final season March 27, Rodriguez’s film credits include “Annihilation” and “Deepwater Horizon.” She can currently be seen on the big screen in Catherine Hardwicke crime thriller “Miss Bala.”
“Someone Great” hits Netflix April 19.
