Trailer Watch: Gina Torres Enters the World of Politics in “Suits” Spinoff “Pearson”

"Pearson"

Gina Torres lost her passion for the law, and was disbarred, in “Suits,” but it looks like she’s found a new calling in the series’ upcoming spinoff. USA Network has dropped a trailer for “Pearson,” and it sees Torres’ character, Jessica Pearson, leaving New York City and her life as a lawyer behind and entering the world of Chicago politics.

Now working for a politician, Jessica claims that she’s “anxious to give something back.” But many of her peers are aware of her past. When one mentions her reputation as a “killer,” Jessica retorts, “then you know what you’re up against.”

Jessica’s accused of simply needing something to do because she misses the action, and told that she doesn’t know anything about politics. She’s not worried about those who doubt her character or potential, though. While Jessica concedes she may not know much about politics, she’s quick to add, “I do know about power.”

Torres came up with the initial idea for “Pearson,” and was inspired by the events of the 2016 election, Deadline reports. “I realized that that’s what [Jessica] did in the world of ‘Suits,’ not just walking the line but blurring the line and rewriting it,” Torres explained.

After leaving “Suits” as a series regular mid-way through Season 6 of the legal drama, Torres appeared in some episodes of the show’s seventh season, but did not return for Season 8, which is currently airing.

“Angie Tribeca,” “Westworld,” and “The Catch” are among Torres’ recent credits. No word on a premiere date for “Pearson.”
