“My mom had me when she was my age,” says 15-year-old Ginny (Antonia Gentry, “Candy Jar”) in a new trailer for “Ginny & Georgia.” As her mother Georgia (Brianne Howey, “Dollface”) puts it, “We’re like the ‘Gilmore Girls,’ but with bigger boobs.” The Netflix dramedy series follows the mother and daughter as they put down roots in New England after years of moving around.
Desperate for a place to call home, Ginny is tired of her mother’s attempts to outrun her past. “My mom deals with her problems by ignoring them, bundling them up, and packing them away,” she explains. The spot hints that Georgia committed a crime to protect her family and has been fleeing law enforcement ever since.
“We wanted to make a grounded show with real teenagers, real emotions, and honesty. Fifteen-year-old girls go through a lot. Like, a hell of a lot,” said “Ginny & Georgia” creator and exec producer Sarah Lampert. “Something we talked about a lot in the writers’ room is that everyone is fighting a battle that you can’t see. And although our characters are flawed we treat them with compassion, which is something the world needs more of right now. We weren’t really interested in labeling our characters ‘right’ and ‘wrong,’ or passing judgement on them, but instead wanted to explore their gray areas.”
“Ginny and Georgia” launches on Netflix February 24. Debra J. Fisher (“Being Mary Jane”) serves as showrunner.
