Trailer Watch: “Girls5eva” Are Still Chasing Pop Stardom

"Girls5eva"

Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Philipps are determined to make “the biggest comeback in pop music history” in “Girls5eva,” a Peacock comedy about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s giving their dreams one more shot. A trailer for the series sees its members planning a reunion and reflecting on their legacy.

“The messages in our songs are bad,” Dawn (Bareilles) admits. Urged by their manager to “try to sound horny,” the group recorded songs about “jailbait” sex and other problematic subject matter. An older and wiser Dawn vows to write “an anthem to things that aren’t perfect but are still great.”

A Grammy Award-winning singer, Bareilles received Tony nominations for “Waitress” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical” and an Emmy nod for NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”

Best known for her Tony and Grammy-winning role in “Hamilton,” Goldsberry’s other credits include “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

“A.P. Bio,” “Mapleworth Murders,” and “Wine Country” are among Emmy-winning “SNL” alumna Pell’s recent credits.

Phillips’ credits include “I Feel Pretty,” “Cougar Town,” and “Freaks and Geeks.” She hosted “Busy Tonight” on E! from 2018 to 2019.

Meredith Scardino created “Girls5eva.” She and Tina Fey are among the project’s exec producers. The pair previously collaborated on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” a Netflix comedy about a cult survivor the former wrote for and the latter co-created.

“Girls5eva” starts streaming May 6.
