Trailer Watch: Glenn Close Can’t Stop “The Girl with All the Gifts”

“The Girl with All the Gifts”

An intense new trailer has landed for “The Girl with All the Gifts,” a fresh take on a zombie story. Set in the near future, the dystopian film explores what happens after “humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating ‘hungries.’ Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects,” its official synopsis hints.

Although these kids have been infected with the zombie pathogen, they’ve retained “normal thoughts and emotions” — but have developed a craving for flesh. What distinguishes them from other hungries is that they’re able to think and feel. A biologist (Glenn Close, “Damages”) is studying the children to learn more, but her methods are seriously questionable. The Dr. seems to have missed Research Ethics 101 — her experiments and approach are cruel and dehumanizing.

One particular child (newcomer Sennia Nanuastands) stands out at the army base in rural England where this group of children are being studied. “You’re not like anything that’s ever existed before,” the biologist tells her in the trailer. Part of what sets the girl apart is her close, loving relationship with a teacher (Gemma Arterton, “Quantum of Solace”)

The atmospheric spot for the horror film reveals that the army base is overtaken by hungries. Watch the action-packed trailer to find out what happens next, and to learn more about the so-called Girl with All the Gifts.

Directed by Colm McCarthy (“Peaky Blinders”), the movie hits U.S. theaters February 24. “The Girl with All the Gifts” made its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016 and earned strong reviews on the festival circuit. You can watch more footage from the film in its previously released UK trailer.
