“Women are now empowered,” feminist attorney Gloria Allred declares in the trailer for “Seeing Allred,” “and they will never be silent again.” That’s true: our culture is experiencing a major sea change thanks to brave women sharing their stories of sexual misconduct as well as the launch of #MeToo and #TimesUp. But, as Sophie Sartain and Roberta Grossman’s documentary makes clear, Allred has been a crusader for women’s rights long before the upheaval of 2017.
As the film subject says herself, Allred’s commitment for getting justice for women is personal, not just ideological. “She understands what we are experiencing based on what she had experienced herself,” an interviewee explains in the clip. Not that that stops her detractors from arguing her passion is all for show. “People say, ‘She’s loud, she’s got an ego — she must just love the camera,’” a commentator observes. “I just say, ‘Haven’t you met any men like that?’”
“Seeing Allred” will makes its world premiere at Sundance on Sunday, January 21. It debuts on Netflix February 9. Check out the trailer and official poster below.
