Grace and Frankie have been “parent trapped” in Season 5 of their titular Netflix comedy. A new trailer for the Jane Fonda-Lily Tomlin series has dropped and it sees the duo breaking out of the retirement community their kids put them in.
Determined to live independently, they return to their old house — even though it’s empty and has been sold. “What are you gonna do if you fall or if one of you has a stroke?” one of their kids asks. “Fuck it,” Grace (Fonda) replies, shrugging her shoulders.
That sentiment seems to be the overall philosophy of Season 5. Grace and Frankie are both going to do what they want: fuck what their children and ex-husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) might think. Frankie (Tomlin) is re-embracing her “raw, uncompromising, dangerous” former lifestyle. Grace is embarking on a new romance. They’re both indulging in a lot of edibles.
Oh, and they both join — and quickly exit — some sort of commune or cult, possibly the Hare Krishnas. “Who knew the fuck-it life was gonna be so hard?” Frankie observes as she and Grace high-tail it out of a tent. Both of them are sporting long, deep red robes.
Fonda won Oscars for “Coming Home” and “Klute.” She was most recently seen in comedy “Book Club” and documentary “Jane Fonda in Five Acts.”
Tomlin received an Oscar nod for “Nashville.” Her recent credits include “The Magic School Bus Rides Again,” in which she reprises her “Magic School Bus” character Ms. Frizzle, and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
“Grace and Frankie” returns January 18 on Netflix. “Friends” writer-producer Marta Kauffman created the show with Howard J. Morris (“Sullivan & Son”).
