Trailer Watch: Grace Van Patten Joins an Army at War with Men in Karen Cinorre’s “Mayday”

"Mayday": Tjaša Kalkan

Grace Van Patten and Mia Goth debate the difference between heroes and psychopaths in a new trailer for “Mayday,” Karen Cinorre’s fantasy pic about 20th century sirens. After being transported to a dreamlike coastline, Ana (Van Patten, “Nine Perfect Strangers”) is invited to join a female army at war with men. The group lure men with radio signals and hunt them for sport.

“You never had a chance back there,” Marsha (Goth, “Emma.”) tells Ana. “A chance to win.” She asks, “Do you remember what happened to you before you came here? It wasn’t a very good story, so I’m giving you a new one.”

But Ana doesn’t like her new story, and becomes more and more convinced that she doesn’t belong in her new home. “I want to go back,” she insists.

“A modern ‘Wizard of Oz,’ ‘Mayday’ seeks to create a better mythology around women and girls — to create characters that are not dreary clichés,” Cinorre told us. “It’s a a film that explores the darkness women often face through violence, and how we can forge something beautiful and powerful within that. It’s a film that tries to speak to these things by showing a young woman choose life over death. ‘Mayday’ is a film dedicated to all the girls who didn’t make it. I hope it can offer hope and understanding to those that may be on the edge,” she explained.

“Mayday” marks Cinorre’s feature debut. The film hits theaters and on demand October 1.
