A NSFW trailer has landed for “The Edge of Seventeen,” a coming-of-age dramedy starring Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit,” “Pitch Perfect 2”) as Nadine, an awkward geek with a genetically gifted, popular older brother. The teen offers a helpful way to understand humanity: she explains, “There are two types of people in the world — the people who radiate confidence and naturally excel at life and the people who hope all those people die in an explosion.” Her brother, of course, falls into the former categorization, and she the latter.
Nadine finds solace in the company of her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson, “Ravenswood”), who she sees as a kindred spirit. But then her platonic soulmate starts dating her brother. “Think about how shitty this is for me,” Nadine begs Krista. Nadine struggles to cope with Krista’s newfound popularity and romantic life while dealing with family problems and a crush of her own.
Check out the trailer below, which features Woody Harrelson playing a deeply unsympathetic and foul-mouthed teacher, and Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine’s mom.
“The Edge of Seventeen” was written and directed by Kelly Fremon (“Post Grad”). You can catch it in theaters November 18.
