In the international trailer for “Barely Lethal,” Hailee Steinfeld shows true grit as an orphan who attends a special school dedicated to training its young students to kill.
The “Pitch Perfect 2” co-star plays Megan, the best assassin at the school. It’s only after she’s sent into the field that Megan discovers what she’s missing out on — a normal life. With that new goal in mind, Megan fakes her death and enrolls in Mission High School. “This is my way out,” she explains. Of course, the normal high-school experience turns out to be a battlefield in its own right.
The trailer shows Megan struggling to adjust to her new life, learning how to dress and act, and dealing with a different kind of sharpshooters, i.e., the mean girls who trick her into believing that becoming the school mascot will win Megan her crush’s affections). Based on the trailer, “Barely Lethal” looks like it’s going to be a hybrid between an action flick and a teen movie — a darker “Spy Kids” set in high school.
Sophie Turner (“Game of Thrones”) and Jessica Alba co-star. A release date has yet to be announced.
