Hailee Steinfeld is switching gears from a cappella to an explosion-ridden blockbuster. The “Pitch Perfect 3” star toplines “Bumblebee,” a spinoff of the “Transformers” franchise that sees her discovering a gem in a junkyard. A new teaser for the pic shows Charlie (Steinfeld) crossing paths with a VW bug that changes her life. The car is no ordinary fixer-upper. It’s not long before Charlie realizes her new ride is capable of extraordinary feats. The Autobot has a destiny — and she’s going along for the ride.
“Let me tell you something. A driver don’t pick the car. The car picks the driver,” a voiceover in the spot explains. A “mystical bond between man and machine” is mentioned, and it’s clear that relationship extends to Charlie, a young woman. We catch glimpses of Charlie and Bumblebee getting to know one another, and a high-stakes mission is alluded to. “You got people out there who need you. This is why you’re here, Bee,” Charlie tells Bumblebee.
Steinfeld just signed on to play Emily Dickinson in an Apple series about the 19th century poet. The “Edge of Seventeen” actress earned an Oscar nod for her breakout role in “True Grit” back in 2011.
Penned by Christina Hodson (“Unforgettable,” “Birds of Prey”), “Bumblebee” hits theaters December 21. John Cena (“Blockers”) co-stars.
