A new trailer for “Untouchable” kicks off with newscasters reporting on the growing number of women accusing movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and misconduct. Hollywood’s open secret dropped like a bomb, bringing the #MeToo movement into the mainstream and changing the dialogue surrounding workplace harassment, consent, and sexual assault.
“Untouchable” sees BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Ursula Macfarlane turning the camera on Weinstein’s accusers, giving them the opportunity to publicly reflect on how they were encouraged to keep their “[mouths] shut” and the “collateral damage” of their traumatic encounters with the powerful producer.
Interviewees include Rosanna Arquette, Hope D’Amore, and Paz de la Huerta.
“The most sinister aspect is that the system enabled it,” we’re told. Described as a “bully” and “the sheriff in town,” Weinstein “scared people — in the same way a gangster would,” and he used intimidation tactics, as well as his resources and power, to keep women silent. And he wouldn’t have been able to behave this way, year after year, without many people turning a blind eye to his crimes — or actively helping him continue his reign of terror.
“Former employees re-examine what they thought they knew, and speak of their sense of shame and ‘survivor’s guilt,'” the film’s synopsis details. “But it is most impactful when the women who Weinstein allegedly harmed give their painfully frank accounts of what the abuse did to their lives – physically, emotionally, professionally, and financially.”
Hulu will release “Untouchable” September 2.
