Victorian London is transformed in the wake of a supernatural event in a new trailer for “The Nevers.” Set in 1896, the HBO fantasy sees certain people, most of whom are women, gaining abnormal abilities, and becoming the target of the church and purists. “The Touched are rewriting the rules of reality. I want them under control — even if it requires a bloodletting,” one character insists.
Seen as a “goldmine” by some and derided for their “weird deformities and afflictions” by others, The Touched are in need of protection from those who believe there’s a “harmony to our world that’s worth preserving.” HBO’s synopsis of the series reveals that “it falls to mysterious, quick-fisted widow Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) and brilliant young inventor Penance Adair (Ann Skelly) to protect and shelter these gifted ‘orphans.'”
Convinced that a “better world” is possible, Amalia believes she has a mission. “I’m not cut out for it, but it matters,” she says. “The future of the world depends on what I’m doing.”
Part One of the first season of “The Nevers” debuts on HBO April 11. Part Two will follow at a later date.
