“When I was young, I dreamed of freedom,” says Helen Mirren in a new trailer for “Catherine the Great.” “I dreamed of breaking chains. But as you get older, your choices narrow, so instead I gave us an empire. I knew exactly what I was doing,” she insists.
Set to debut on HBO this fall, the miniseries sees the Oscar-winning actress playing the titular game-changing monarch and politician. Catherine the Great ruled the Russian empire in the 18th century.
“I am very excited by the possibility of embodying a woman from history who grabbed and then wielded great power,” Mirren has said of the project “She rewrote the rules of governance by a woman, and succeeded to the extent of having the word Great attached to her name, Catherine the Great.”
Elle Fanning will portray the Empress of Russia in “The Great,” an upcoming Hulu series.
Mirren won an Oscar for her role in“The Queen.” She also received nods for “The Last Station,” “Gosford Park,” and “The Madness of King George.” “The Nutcracker in Four Realms,” “Winchester,” and “The Fate of the Furious” are among her recent credits. Her previous TV projects include “Prime Suspect,” “Elizabeth I,” and TV movie “Phil Spector.”
