Trailer Watch: “House of Cards” Season 6 Sees Mutiny in Claire Underwood’s Administration

"House of Cards"

Being the first woman president of the United States was never going to be easy. But, as Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) can attest in the trailer for “House of Cards'” sixth and final season, her presidency is especially fraught. “The American oligarchs out there — they are coming for us. They are trying to strip me of my constitutional power as Commander in Chief,” she says in a speech. But Claire’s enemies extend way beyond oligarchs.

As the spot reveals, Claire’s staff and supposed allies are working against her, too. Bill Shepherd (Greg Kinnear) denounces her in a televised interview, while Annette Shepherd (Diane Lane) plays mind games, bragging she slept with Claire’s late husband. And Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), Frank Underwood’s chief of staff, is making it his personal mission to bring Claire down.

“Every punishment that history will surely visit upon Claire Underwood will be exactly what she deserves,” a pundit declares. Well, it seems history will have some help from Claire Underwood’s own administration.

Wright took on “House of Cards'” lead role after Kevin Spacey was cut loose in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

In 2016 Wright fought for  — and apparently won —  pay parity with Spacey. However, last year news surfaced that she did not receive equal pay after all. Wright reportedly received $420K per episode, as compared to Spacey’s $500K. “I don’t think I’m getting paid the same amount,” Wright said. “I really don’t like being duped. It’s such a male-dominant workforce still. There’s a conditioning. And changing the condition of men is what needs to happen.”

Wright has received five consecutive Emmy nominations for portraying Claire, and won a Golden Globe for her performance. She has directed 10 episodes of “House of Cards.” The actress’ recent big screen credits include “Wonder Woman” and “Blade Runner 2049.” She’s set to appear in next year’s “Wonder Woman 1984.”

“House of Cards'” final season hits Netflix November 2.
