Erin Lee Carr is tackling another scandal. The documentary filmmaker has explored everything from rampant sexual abuse and the culture that enabled it in “At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal” to Munchausen syndrome by proxy and murder in “Mommy Dead and Dearest,” and now she’s revisiting the 2013 arrest of 35-year-old crime drug lab chemist Sonja Farak in “How to Fix a Drug Scandal.” A trailer just dropped for the Netflix docuseries.
“I was smoking [crack] at the lab. I was smoking at home. I actually smoked in the evidence room. I was totally controlled by my addiction,” says Farak in the spot.
A single chemist can handle thousands of cases a year, and initially, “it wasn’t really clear the extent to which things had gone wrong,” we’re told. The scope of the issue soon became apparent.
“How do you come out and make a statement that no one’s been wrongfully convicted? How do you know?” one of the character asks, pointing to the fact that Farak’s mistakes may have sent innocent people to jail.
