“When you dream, it happens so fast. The American dream happens in slow motion. It takes years. I came here to do something. Don’t lose faith in me,” says Iván (Armando Espitia) in a new trailer for Heidi Ewing’s “I Carry You With Me.” After falling in love for the first time, the aspiring chef leaves his partner Gerardo (Christian Vazquez) and home behind in Mexico to follow his dreams in the U.S. “I need to move myself forward,” he explains.
“The film is about memory, loss, family, and love through the eyes of an immigrant. It is based very closely on the story of two dear friends of mine,” Ewing told us.
The spot touches on xenophobia that Iván experiences in the U.S. and the homophobia he endures in Mexico.
Ewing made her narrative debut with “I Carry You With Me.” Her doc credits include “Jesus Camp,” which received an Oscar nomination, “One of Us,” and “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You,” all of which she co-directed with Rachel Grady.
“I Carry You With Me” made its world premiere earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival and is included in the official selection for the New York Film Festival. The film is scheduled to open in January 2021.
