Trailer Watch: Issa Rae Is Afraid to Love in Stella Meghie’s “The Photograph”

"The Photograph"

“How are you supposed to know if you want to spend forever with someone?” asks Issa Rae in a new trailer for “The Photograph.” Stella Meghie’s romance sees the “Insecure” co-creator and star playing Mae, a woman who falls hard and fast for the new man in her life but is struggling to commit to him.

Mae and Michael (LaKeith Stanfield) share an instant connection. “It felt like we’d kissed before,” Mae tells a friend following their first kiss. Immediately after their first date Michael calls her to tell her that she’s special. The feeling is clearly mutual, but the whirlwind romance seems to overwhelm Mae. “I’m afraid to love you,” she admits to Michael. Her mother “wasn’t very good at love,” and Mae is worried that she’s just like her.

Rae received an Emmy nomination for her acting on “Insecure.” The comedy will return for a fourth season on HBO with a premiere date TBA. “The Hate U Give” and “Little” are among her other acting credits. Rae will re-team with Meghie on “American Princess,” a comedy about an American woman who finds herself drawn into a world of wealth and high society when she moves to London.

Meghie and Rae first joined forces when the former directed the latter in an episode of “Insecure.” Meghie’s feature credits include “The Weekend,” “Everything, Everything,” and “Jean of the Joneses.”

“The Photograph” hits theaters February 14.
