Set to James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” the new trailer for the long-in-the-works, much anticipated television adaptation of “Y: The Last Man” sees women taking power in every facet of society. The new order isn’t brought on by a coup or social revolution, but an apocalyptic event. One day, all mammals with a Y chromosome suddenly die, and it’s up to those left behind — most of whom appear to be cis women — to figure out what happened and to save the human race.
Only one “reproductively interesting” cis man (Ben Schnetzer) and his male pet monkey have managed to survive. Meanwhile, a high-ranking senator (Diane Lane) becomes president, contending with food and power shortages, public unrest, and a power struggle with a woman giving off serious Karen vibes (Amber Tamblyn). An ass-kicking agent (Ashley Romans) has vowed to find “the answer to how this all happened — and how we fix it.” And civilians are grieving their lost loved ones while trying to find their place in this new world.
“They are hungry, angry, terrified,” the president says of the public. “We will rebuild together.”
“Y: The Last Man” is based on the DC Comics’ series of the same name by Pia Guerra and Brian K. Vaughan. The ensemble cast also includes Olivia Thirlby, Marin Ireland, Diana Bang, and Elliot Fletcher. Eliza Clark serves as showrunner and Cheryl Dunye and Louise Friedberg are among the first season’s all-women directing team.
As has been previously discussed, it’s unclear if or how the show will factor trans women and intersex and nonbinary individuals into its story. It has been confirmed that there will be a trans man character.
“Y: The Last Man” premieres September 13 on FX on Hulu.
