Trailer Watch: James Franco Is An Unreliable Narrator in Pamela Romanowsky’s ‘The Adderall Diaries’

A trailer has arrived for Pamela Romanowsky’s debut feature film, “The Adderall Diaries.” The drama is based on Stephen Elliott’s bestselling memoir of the same name and made its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival last year.

“What happens to us makes us who we are,” says Stephen (played by James Franco). The scenes that follow suggest that a lot has happened to Stephen, much of it at the hands of his frighteningly volatile father (Ed Harris).

Stephen, a writer, is working on a new book — true crime. But as a prisoner Stephen is interviewing behind bars (Christian Slater) observes, “Writers have a way of spinning things the way they want to.”

The power — and unreliability — of memory and perspective is emphasized throughout the spot, especially when Stephen is reunited with his estranged father, who remembers things very differently than his son.

Romanowsky told Women and Hollywood that she wants the film to make audiences to think about “[h]ow each of us organizes our own memories and narratives — where each of us has edited and exaggerated to present a certain character, and whether that’s a character we still want to be.”

“The Adderall Diaries” doesn’t open in theaters until April 15, but it’ll be available to DirecTV customers starting today. Amber Heard (“The Danish Girl”) co-stars.
