Janelle Monáe is looking onward and being pushed backwards in a new trailer for “Antebellum.” “We’re expected to be seen, not heard — but we are the future,” Veronica (Monáe), a successful author, tells an audience. “Our time is now.”
Fate has other plans for Veronica. Chosen to “save us from our past,” she’s seemingly transported back in time and finds herself as a slave on a plantation in the Antebellum South. She doesn’t plan to say there for long, though — the spot suggests that Veronica is planning an escape.
“Harriet,” “Hidden Figures,” and “Moonlight” are among Monáe’s previous credits. An eight-time Grammy nominee, Monáe’s albums include “The Electric Lady” and “Dirty Computer.”
“Antebellum” arrives in theaters April 24.
