Janelle Monáe’s idyllic life comes to a grinding halt in a new trailer for “Antebellum.” We see glimpses of Veronica (Monáe), a successful author, painting, cuddling, and playing with her partner and kids — only for her universe to be turned upside down when she’s “chosen.”
Suddenly, Veronica is seemingly transported back in time and finds herself trapped as a slave on a plantation in the Antebellum South. “Wherever you were before, that’s over,” she’s told. But Veronica isn’t prepared to say goodbye to her old life — she’s determined to escape her current existence and return to her family.
“Harriet,” “Hidden Figures,” and “Moonlight” are among Monáe’s previous credits. She toplines “Homecoming’s” second season. The psychological thriller returns May 22 on Amazon. An eight-time Grammy nominee, Monáe’s albums include “The Electric Lady” and “Dirty Computer.”
“Antebellum” is slated to hit theaters August 21.
