“Good morning. I’m bringing you some sad and upsetting news. And while I don’t know the details of the allegations, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell), my co-host and partner of 15 years was fired today,” says Jennifer Aniston in a new trailer for “The Morning Show.” The Emmy-winning “Friends” alumna leads the cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ series, which looks behind the scenes of an early morning newscast in the throes of a major scandal. The show she serves as an anchor on is “facing the biggest crisis” of its history, or is in the process of an “epic rebirth,” depending on who you ask.
The morning show is looking for fresh talent, which it finds in the form of Reese Witherspoon. Despite being convinced that she doesn’t “fit the mold,” her character is being courted to join the newscast. She’s not its biggest fan.”Your show sucks,” she says. “It’s barely news.”
The quality of the show — or lack thereof — may have something to do with the seemingly sexist execs who are running it. But it looks like Aniston’s ready to seize back control of the narrative and the show. “The part you guys never seem to realize is that you don’t have the power anymore — and frankly I’ve let you bozos handle this long enough,” she tells a room of suits. “We are doing this my way.”
“Murder Mystery” and “Dumplin'” are among Aniston’s recent credits. Witherspoon’s include “Big Little Lies” and “A Wrinkle in Time.” The Oscar-winning “Walk the Line” star received an Emmy nod for the former.
“The Morning Show” is expected to premiere in fall 2019. Mimi Leder (“On the Basis of Sex”) directs and Kerry Ehrin (“Bates Motel”) serves as showrunner. The drama’s supporting cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Fast Color”).
