Trailer Watch: Jennifer Garner Demands Justice in “Peppermint”

"Peppermint"

If you’ve missed Jennifer Garner’s ass-kicking in “Alias,” this one’s for you. The Golden Globe winner isn’t reprising her role as Sydney Bristow, but a new trailer for “Peppermint” sees her playing a character every bit as capable as the CIA spy. Only this time she’s working on the other side of the law.

The spot kicks off with Riley North (Garner) having a  picture-perfect experience at a carnival with her husband and young daughter. Suddenly, bullets are flying — the family is being attacked by armed men in a car. Riley survives but the rest of her family doesn’t.

The men who executed the attack are part of a cartel that has “everyone in their pockets,” and Riley is bribed to commit perjury and misidentify the culprits. She refuses, but her testimony isn’t enough for a conviction. The men responsible for her family’s murders go free — for now, at least.

Riley is determined to get justice, even if it means taking matters into her own hands. She disappears for five years to train her mind and body to take on the cartel and everyone who has enabled them, including “corrupt judges” and “dirty cops.”

Her return coincides with a number of murders. While her brand of justice is celebrated by social media, and we’re told, “it’s not a coincidence that makes this area low crime — it is low crime because of her,” Riley stands accused of multiple homicides. And she’s not going to stop anytime soon. “Watching someone take everything from you — it turns you into someone else,” she says.

Check out the trailer to see Riley in action.

Garner earned four Emmy nods and won a Golden Globe for her leading role in “Alias,” which ran on ABC from 2001-2006. She’s returning to TV for HBO’s “Camping,” an upcoming limited series about a camping trip from “Girls'” Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. “Love, Simon,” “Miracles from Heaven,” and “Dallas Buyers Club” are among her big screen credits.

“Peppermint” opens September 7.
