A newly cut trailer has been released for Jennifer Lawrence’s upcoming vehicle “Joy,” her third collaboration with director David O. Russell.
The spot begins with Joy (Lawrence) telling her daughter, “We got here from hard work, patience and humility. So I want to tell you, don’t ever think that the world owes you anything because it doesn’t. The world doesn’t owe you a thing.”
The footage that follows reinforces Joy’s harsh advice: The world is not a charitable place, and if Joy wants something, she’ll have to earn it — doing whatever it takes to do so.
“I have real ambitions and real ideas,” Joy says. That’s how she goes from being “an unemployed housewife” who has never run a business to heading an enterprise worth millions of dollars. “Joy” is far from a fairy tale, though: this rags-to-riches story features crime, betrayal and a police arrest. And yet Joy seems capable of handling whatever is thrown her way — simply put, she’s a boss.
The real-life Joy Mangano holds over a hundred patents and appears regularly on the Home Shopping Network. She is the president of Ingenious Designs and is best known for creating the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. It’ll be interesting to see how the HSN version of Mangano lines up with the one in this grittier, saltier film.
No one has seen “Joy” yet, but it seems Lawrence already has a place in the Oscar race reserved for her on the basis of this performance. The A-list actress previously won an Oscar for Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” and was nominated for her supporting role in his last film, “American Hustle.”
“Joy” opens December 25.
