Trailer Watch: Jennifer Lawrence is No Ordinary Wife in Susanne Bier’s ‘Serena’

Jennifer Lawrence gets a different type of role in the long awaited Serena, directed by the Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier. The depression era film follows the strong-willed wife (Jennifer Lawrence) of a businessman about to lose his fortune (Bradley Cooper). When the couple are plagued with Serena’s infertility, their devotion to each other is tested.

But Serena is no simple romance. Based on Ron Rash’s novel of the same name, the NY Times describes the titular character in the book as woman whose wants and desires are global:

“Serena has clear ambitions: to log the landscape bare, keep [her husband’s] land from being made part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and move on to Brazil and its mahogany forests. Her inability to sleep well is not this book’s only intimation of Lady Macbeth. In a novel punctuated by monstrous logging accidents, described with a minimalism that reflects the workers’ terrible resignation, she schemes and thrives.”

It’ll be thrilling to watch Lawrence take on a role that gives her more shades of gray than any she’s tackled before.

Serena will premiere at the London Film Festival and open in the UK on November 27. It has yet to find a US release date.
